Today

At the core of the global sustainable mobility, internal combustion engines (IC) such as Advanced Diesel and Gasoline engines will stay the only way for the long distance and commutation services. For near to short term, IC engines will continue to extensively use fossil fuels, certainly blended with biofuels (Ethanol and Biodiesels). For the short to medium term, new synthetic and clean “XtL” fuels should represent the major energy carrier for transportation.

In parallel, new powertrain concepts and adaptation have been developed for years with commercial introduction and implementation for short distances and journey market segments: today, the hybrid concepts, combining IC engines with electricity storage devices and systems (micro-, mild-, and full-hybridization), are available on the market.

Tomorrow

Medium and long term will see synthetic fuels from natural sources of carbon molecules and hydrogen. The today “XtL” based fuels, pure Hydrogen and electricity from renewable sources are facing many technical and economical obstacles to meet the today sociopolitical acceptance. Then, Hydrogen and water will be at the core of the stakes.
